Traditional Masks of Bengali New Year Celebration

The UNESCO claimed “Pôhela Boishakh” the Bengali New Year as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016. Since the festival and the harvest season take place during the same time, people pray for good harvest while celebrating the new year. Students and children in Bangladesh design the masks and will use them during the parade. Each mask represents the country’s national animals such as bird, fish, tiger and a lot more. They are handmade of paper mâché with different colors. The displayed masks are representing a tiger and owl.
