“Marimonda" Mask

“Carnaval de Barranquilla”, also known as Barranquilla’s Carnival, is a major folkloric celebration in Colombia recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO since 2003. It has a century long history and is celebrated for welcoming spring, often symbolising birth and renewal.

“Marimonda”, a carnival character of Barranquilla, with big ears and long nose, resembles an elephant and a monkey. The mask is made of polyester fabric, with vibrant and mismatch colors.

It was a character created by the poor to taunt the high society.
