With "Chinese Delights in Full Splendour" as this year’s theme, the Chinese word hua has multiple meanings such as flower and China. In a blaze of floral glory, the lantern displays at Victoria Park carry all sorts of traditional elements, offering visitors a joyous, dazzling Mid-Autumn Festival complete with a vast range of intangible cultural heritage items. These include Cantonese opera, fire dragon dance, the making of Foshan coloured lantern, Chaozhou flower lantern3 and Seong Ka Carpentry4 demonstrated by traditional handicraft artists, as well as lantern riddles.
The lanterns, themed around the 24 solar terms in the Chinese calendar, set out to present the varied faces and ambiences of the four seasons. Another major attraction is a gigantic lantern in the shape of the floral board at bamboo shed theatres. While walking past this proscenium arch, visitors can get a glimpse of both sides of the Cantonese opera stage, feeling its charm and more in various classic scenes.
