Defying Gravity Musical Theatre Scheme

The programme provides systematic training on musicals to the children and teenagers in Islands District and aims to promote and nurture interest in and appreciation of musicals in the community. Community outreach performances, musical workshops for children and youngsters, show visits and finale performances will be included in the programme to connect local residents of diverse race via musicals for the promotion of multiculturalism.

Phase 1: Getting to Know You
1 opening musical performance and 9 workshops will be organised to boost interests in musical in the community. The public performances will also promote the various activities of the programme and attract participants.

Phase 2: Summertime
2-month workshops will be organised to introduce the elements of musical theatre to the community. Participants with outstanding performance will be auditioned for the showcase. Show visits will also be arranged for workshop participants.

Phase 3: Defying Gravity
3 showcases and 5-month workshops will be organised to offer more in-depth experience and knowledge of musical theatre to the community. Participants with outstanding performance will be auditioned for the finale performance to showcase their achievements. 2 more show visits will also be arranged for workshop participants.

Phase 4: Defying Gravity - On These Islands
Small groups of workshop participants will visit and perform for the community in schools and elderly centres. Performed together on the samesta by workshop participants and professional performers, Defying Gravity – On These Islands will tell a story emblematic of the history, culture and lifestyle of the Islands District.

In view of the development of the pandemic, the performances were cancelled and replaced by online programmes on the YouTube channel of 18dART Community Arts Scheme.

All activities of the scheme are free of charge.
